Balancing a Full-Time Job and a Passion Business: The Honest Truth
When I first started Candlebites, it was a simple spark of inspiration. A way to bring the scents and memories of Singapore to life in candle form. Four years later, Candlebites has grown into something so much bigger: a small business that creates wedding favours, corporate gifts, and handmade keepsakes that bring joy to people’s lives.
But here’s the honest truth: Candlebites is not my only full-time commitment. By day, I work in a global role that goes far beyond the typical 9 to 5. My job requires me to work late nights, collaborate across time zones, and even travel. It’s exciting and rewarding, but it also means my time and energy are often stretched thin.
So how do I juggle both?
Finding Motivation When Life Gets Hectic
There are days when I feel completely drained from work, and the last thing I want to do is pour wax or brainstorm designs. But then I remind myself why Candlebites exists in the first place - to celebrate the flavours, culture, and little joys of Singapore through something handmade and meaningful.
Every time a customer shares that our candles reminded them of home, or that our wedding favors brought a smile to their guests’ faces, it reignites my energy. That’s what keeps me going, even after a long day of Zoom calls or a late night meetings.
The Reality of Balance (and Why It’s Not Always Perfect)
I’ll be honest, balance doesn’t always look like a neat pie chart where every part of life gets equal attention. Some weeks my full-time job takes over, and Candlebites has to wait. Other weeks, I’m deep in preparing wedding orders and staying up past midnight to make sure everything is perfect.
And that’s okay. Balance for me, is not about perfection. It’s about giving myself permission to flow between both roles, trusting that I can show up fully where I’m needed most in that moment.
A Note for Anyone Pursuing Their Passion
If you’re someone with a side hustle, a creative passion, or a dream you’re building alongside your day job, I see you. It isn’t easy, but it is absolutely worth it. The key is to hold on to the why behind what you’re doing. Let that passion fuel you on the tough days, and celebrate the small wins along the way.
Why I Keep Going
At the heart of it, Candlebites brings me joy. It’s where my creativity comes alive. It’s where I can celebrate Singapore’s colorful culture and turn inspiration into something people can hold, gift, and enjoy. No matter how busy life gets, that love for Candlebites is what keeps me going.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: you don’t have to choose between your career and your passion. With a little resilience, a lot of coffee, and a whole lot of heart, you can make space for both.
Scentfully Yours,
Rekha
